These are the steps to create an editable template in AEM 6.4.
1. Create a template folder
- Go to Global Navigation > Tools > Configuration Browser. All existing folders, including the global folder, are listed in the left rail.
- Click Create.
- In the Create Configuration dialog, enter a Title for the configuration folder (for example, SampleFolder) and tick Editable Templates to allow editable templates in this folder.
- Click Create.
2. Create a new template
This is usually done by a template author.
- Go to Tools > General > Templates.
- Select the folder created above, SampleFolder.
- Click Create, select HTML5 Page (content page) and click Next.
- Enter a name and description and click Create.
A success message confirms the template was created.
Select Open to start editing the template, or Done to return to the template console. The new template looks like this:
In Structure mode, author a text and an image component:
Unlock the root layout container so that every page using this template gets a Drag components here area where authors can add more components.
The policy icon to the left of the lock icon adds policies, such as which components are allowed in this template.
3. Enable the template
In the templates folder, select the template and click Enable. Only enabled templates can be used to create pages.
4. Allow the template on a content root
Finally, link the template to the content path. Here the configuration path is /conf/SampleProjects/settings/wcm/templates; in general it follows the format:
/conf/<your-folder>/settings/wcm/templates/.*
Add this path to the page properties of the content root where pages will be created — here /content/we-retail/language-masters/en. Open the page from the Sites console, go to Page Properties > Advanced > Template Settings, and add the template path under Allowed Templates.
